CREATIVE EIGHT

8 Questions with Maurizio Battifora

1. What situation or person motivated you to pursue art?
In 2003, I viewed a painting by artist Pau Sierra, that caused me to attempt to duplicate it. I surprised myself that my first effort was so good, and it gave me confidence to pursue art professionally.

2. From where do you draw your inspiration to create art?
Really anything and everything! I have been attracted to the motion and drama of the old Renaissance and Baroque masters, and additionally, the works of Rubens, Gustav Klimt and Van Gogh.

3. What emotion are you trying to create for your audience through your art?
I respect any emotion or opinion – any reaction, be it positive or negative, it’s always appreciated. I enjoy storytelling and bringing beauty and pleasure and thoughtfulness to the viewer’s experience.

4. Does an artist have an obligation to make a statement with their art?
No, not at all.

5. Was there ever a time when giving up was the right thing to do?
Never. I would have to stop breathing to give up my work.

6. Is there something in your past career that would surprise people?
No, nothing. I have always pursued art.

7. What do you see as the most important attributes of a successful artist?
Originality.

8. What is the most valuable life lesson you learned from creating art?
Nothing specific – creating art is part of the mosaic of my existence.
