Ikebana is a relaxing, contemplative, mindful practice in which one lives in the moment communing with nature to express the beauty inherent in the florals. These simple, elegant arrangements use live flowers and natural materials. Ikebana is a disciplined 900 year old art form with rules for length, angle and position of the stems. It is different from western flower arranging because ikebana is always asymmetrical with emphasis on negative space. The art encourages focus and attention to detail which is why it was taught to the samurai warriors. Today, business leaders are finding that the principles and practice of ikebana can serve a purpose in the workplace.

Marjorie DaVanzo has been practicing ikebana for over 20 years. As a member of Ikebana International she is on the board of the Rochester chapter and an associate member of the New York City and Miami chapters. DaVanzo also belongs to NAOTA the North American Ohara Teachers Association. She has exhibited and demonstrated her ikebana at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and hosted workshops for the Asian Culture Festival in Miami, Florida. In addition she has led ikebana focused goal setting sessions for L’Oréal and Sparks and Honey in Manhattan.
