What is Abstract Expressionism ?

A painting movement that originated in the 40’s and became popular in the 50’s in which artists typically applied paint rapidly and with force to their huge canvases in an effort to show feelings and emotions. In NOT YOUR ORDINARY PAINTING CLASS, there are no pictures of things to make, no thought to give, or goals to achieve. There is only color and movement and energy that pours through the soul.

 

What makes NYOPC different?

You will not only play your hand at the canvas but get to know renowned abstract expressionists on both an artistic and personal level. Every week, there will be a short discussion about an artist where you will explore their painting style and facts about their private lives. Then inspired by what you’ve learned, you will be free to “channel” their style into your own creative endeavor.

 

To enrich your experience, you will combine acrylic paint with a variety of mediums including pastes, gels, and sands, and experiment with various applications including water dripping, paper toweling and acrylic skins, also traditional and non-traditional applicators. Throughout the four weeks, you will acquire knowledge of action painting, color field painting, color theory, and elements of composition. And, as a student once said, “You will have the time of your life interacting with Fran. Her commitment to have you succeed is priceless.”

4 Canvases — minimum 16” x 20”, maximum 30” x 40”

Assorted palette knives,

Pad of palette paper — white, shiny surface, disposable

Molding paste –heavy or extra heavy

Gel medium — gloss or matte

Pumice Gel — coarse
