Healing Through Art
Every artist at some stage in their artistic career has used their art making activities as a therapeutic tool toward the process of healing, clearing the mind, and self expression. Whether working through pain, loss, depression, illness or other emotional struggles, art helps to heal the soul.
ARTISTS WITH AUTISM provides self-employment opportunities and training for aspiring artists with autism to become self-sufficient, independent entrepreneurs. Several of these artist entrepreneurs are featured in the Reflect exhibition.
ArtStART Mentoring Emerging Teenage Artists, is a professional development program that offers “career-track” teen artists real world experience by showcasing their talents in two professional exhibitions, teaching them how to create art presentation document and curate an exhibit with multiple artists.
Children of the Modern Family, presented by Dr. Wilma Bulkin Siegel. As society changes, so too do the traditional notion of “family.” The modern family is LGBT, it’s interracial, it’s a single male parent who has a child through surrogate, single female artificially inseminated, and every other iteration. Painting the children to tell their story and show their place in society creates a pathway for our society to have tolerance, empathy and respect for others.
FEEDING SOUTH FLORIDA held a student art contest to raise awareness of the summer hunger epidemic families face when children receiving food assistance at school miss meals during summer vacation. The winning entry will be featured on the truck fleet that distributes the food throughout South Florida.
FORT LAUDERDALE WOMENS CLUB, JACK AND JILL NURSERY & U.S. MILITARY Womens Club volunteers harnessed their creative talents to make unique gifts for children at Jack and Jill Nursery to present to their mother’s on Mother’s Day. They also hand-made original Mother’s Day cards with pre-addressed envelopes for attendees at the Reflect reception to sign and send to South Florida mothers currently serving in the military.
REBEL’S DROP-IN CENTER offers free mental health support services to those suffering from mental health or substance abuse issues, giving them artistic outlets, a sense of community, and a positive environment on their path to recovery. Art produced by participants a means of healing expression are featured.
SOUTH FLORIDA WELLNESS CENTER Students in an addiction recovery program channel energy and creativity, gain confidence, learn discipline and have an avenue for personal expression through “The Lens of Empowerment” art program. Students are trained in art and photography and their original works are on display in Reflect.
