An Artistic Collaboration with ArtsUnited

Presented in collaboration with ArtsUnited, the Stories from Within exhibition features contemporary art explorations of the LGBTQIA+ experience, culture, and history in South Florida and beyond.
For 20 years, ArtsUnited – Florida’s premiere LGBTQIA+ Arts Organization – has produced countless initiatives and events that showcase diverse artistic contributions from the LGBTQIA+ community and allies in South Florida. And, for its 2021 edition is joining forces with ArtServe to co-create an inclusive, one-of-a-kind, artistic celebration of queer creativity.
Contemporary art often reflects the social, political, and economic environment of its current times. For that, the concept behind the Stories from Within exhibition is inspired by the LGBTQ+ social movements, resilience, and artistic expressions throughout its history.
Artists of ALL backgrounds, orientations, and disciplines are encouraged to create and present works that imagine the world with harmony, not discord, equality not advantaged vs. disadvantaged, where differences are celebrated as the diversity that makes us all stronger. Autobiographical and celebratory works are welcomed.
Please read the Image Upload Guidelines before submitting. Artwork that does not adhere to these guidelines may be disqualified.
- This is a paid Open Call. No refunds will be issued. We advise that you read all the rules carefully before applying.
- Entries are limited to 5 images and must be accompanied by an artist’s statement (250 words), bio (200 words), and a detailed inventory list of the works. This material must be submitted in an editable format such as Microsoft Word.
- Artwork must be original and created during the past 36 months.
- 2d Artwork must be ready to install, wired, and suitable for hanging.
- 2d works should not exceed 60” wide. If you wish to submit a larger format, please contact ArtServe Curator for approval at sophieb@artserve.org.
- Submissions must include title, dimensions, medium, description, and fair market value (including 40% gallery fee) for each piece that is being submitted.
- Performers: please submit your video links and required information via email to: sophieb@artserve.org
- ALL artists are eligible regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, gender identity, military status, sexual orientation, marital status, or physical ability.
- All artwork is subject to review & selection discretion by an outstanding jury panel and curatorial team. Submission does not guarantee inclusion in the show. Artwork selection is based on relevance to the theme and stated criteria.

Exhibition Judges
Juliana Forero Bio
Juliana Forero is an independent art professional with almost 20 years of experience in multiple aspects of non-profit arts management including fundraising, art exhibitions, and educational programs development. Juliana holds a Ph.D. in Arts Education, a MA in Arts Administration, and a BFA in Visual Arts.
Hunter O'Hanian Bio
Hunter joined Stonewall National Museum & Archives as Executive Director in October 2019. Previously, he was the head of the College Art Association, the largest professional association supporting art historians and visual artists in the world. Before that, he was the founding Director of the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art , the only art museum devoted exclusively to the artwork that speaks to the LGBTQ experience.
Prior to joining Leslie-Lohman, Hunter was the Director of the Foundation for Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. Previously, he led two renowned artists’ residencies programs, having served as the President of Anderson Ranch Arts Center outside of Aspen, CO, and Director of the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA, the largest residency program for emerging artists and writers in the United States.
Hunter has a long career with non-profit boards and community involvement. He is the past board chair of the Alliance of Artists Communities, the national membership organization for artists’ residency programs. Hunter graduated from Boston College and received his law degree from Suffolk University. He has an honorary doctorate of fine arts from the Art Institute of Boston.
Christopher Yoculan Bio
Multimedia Artist and activist Chris Yoculan has always ensured that his work has a social and political message. He began his activist artistic career at the Columbus College of Art and Design by organizing the protest exhibition “A Day Without Art” to bring attention to the HIV and AIDS crisis in the early 90s.
One of his first of his installations, The Coffin Series, was expressive of this epidemic. As an artist, he has exhibited in New York, Spain, Italy, and Austria. His artwork secured the City Link People’s Choice Award 2002 and his piece “Nature is Corrupt” won him the Broward Art Guild Controversy Exhibition Best in Show the same year. He also earned Best in Show at the Tri-County Juried Exhibit in 2003.
Yoculan has also expressed his activism for mental health and mental health equity. He produced the work “Identity” in 2003, a self-portrait made with various pills. He continues his activism daily as the Adult Services Director at Mental Health America and 9Muses Art Center. His service to the community has been recognized by NAMI Broward 2007 TIMES Award with the Footsteps in the Sand Award in 2011 and most recently, The Sierra Tucson “Gratitude For Giving” Visionary Award in 2019. Chris has served on numerous boards and causes to help serve his community, including the Public Art Advisory for the City of Wilton Manors, Art Cultural Tourism Board for the City of Lauderhill, DCFs ADM Planning Council, and an HIV Educator for the American Red Cross, to name a few. He lives in Oakland Park with his husband and two dogs.
